If Social Media Is Today’s Newspaper...

Editorial
What if the question isn't what should I post today, but what kind of publication do I want to create? This first editorial explores the idea that changed the way I think about social media, real estate, and the stories worth telling.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about where we spend our attention.

It used to be newspapers, magazines, and the evening news. Today, it is Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, Pinterest, websites, blogs, podcasts, and whatever link catches our eye next. We move between them almost without thinking, discovering businesses, reading articles, watching videos, keeping up with friends, and quietly deciding what feels worth returning to.

This website and this blog are part of that same world. You may arrive here through a social post, a video, a listing, a search, or something a friend shared. However you found your way here, the path probably began somewhere online.

Like many people, that is also where I get much of my news. It is where I discover a new restaurant, follow what is happening in my community, learn something unexpected, and occasionally disappear down a rabbit hole I never intended to enter. It is also where I see an endless stream of advice telling me what to post, how often to post it, and what I need to do if I want to be seen.

As a real estate advisor, I understand the reality of that.

Social media has become today’s newspaper. It is where people discover businesses, stay connected, and quietly decide who feels familiar long before they ever need their services. If you are not seen, you probably will not be remembered.

I am not trying to go viral. I am trying to be present. There is a difference.

In real estate, people may watch quietly for months, or even years, before they need help. Long before they reach out, they are deciding whether you feel familiar and whether they trust the way you think. What I have wrestled with is how to remain present without sounding like everyone else.

Eventually, I realized I had been asking the wrong question. Instead of asking, What should I post today? I started asking, If social media is today’s newspaper, what kind of publication do I want to create?

Every publication makes choices. Newspapers decide what deserves the front page. Magazines decide which stories are worth telling and how much space to give them. What they include matters, but so does what they leave out.

That was the part that stayed with me.

What belongs?

Once I began thinking about social media that way, I realized the question connected to something that has fascinated me throughout my career: why people choose what they choose.

Why does one person walk into a home and immediately know it is right, while someone else moves through the same rooms and feels nothing? Why do we return to certain places year after year? Why are we drawn to a particular neighborhood, restaurant, piece of art, or jacket hanging on a rack? Those choices are rarely random. They reveal something about what we value, what we notice, and how we want to live.

After more than twenty years in real estate, I am less interested in simply creating content and more interested in sharing ideas worth spending a few minutes with. Sometimes those ideas will begin with real estate. Sometimes they will begin with travel, design, architecture, fashion, family, golf, or a great meal and find their way there unexpectedly.

I do not pretend to have all the answers. I would rather stay curious.

That curiosity has shaped the way I work and the way I serve my clients. Buying or selling a home is rarely just about the property. It is about the people making the decision and everything surrounding it: timing, relationships, aspirations, compromise, excitement, and uncertainty.

If you have found your way here because you are buying or selling a home, I hope you will find something useful. If you are simply curious about people, places, and the decisions that shape our lives, I hope you will find something worth coming back for.
